Climate, Environment and Levelling Up

From "Corporate Strategy"

Go to the project

Agree with plan to form a Housing Company. There is a desperate need for affordable to rent housing.

Need continuing involvement of local communities. Should explore the possibility of Citizens Assemblies.

Need to address anti-social behaviour with more youth workers, in partnership with HCC.

Move to digitalisation should still allow for paper communication with people without digital skills and equipment.

Agree with plan to seek an independent consultee to investigate data from Southern Water re. Stormwater discharges and their impact. There should be no further development until Budd’s Farm is in a position to process all storm water and therefore cease pollution of our Harbours i.e. has adequate water storage capacity.

Addressing the Climate Crisis and reducing carbon emissions should be a high priority. 2050 will be too late. Need to aim for carbon neutrality by 2030. Therefore need to:

Seek funding to provide insulation for more homes under all types of tenure where residents cannot afford it.

Place pressure on developers to build to higher eco standards.

Consider refurbishment of older buildings rather than demolition and rebuilding.

Make public more aware of Climate issues, and encourage lower carbon transport.

Create more and better off-road cycle routes that provide a direct route between centres, rather than a long way round.

Seek to bring more green and skilled jobs to the area. Liaise with colleges to provide the training needed for these.

Important to prevent further degradation of natural environment. Need to preserve sites such as SINCS which have no legal protection and are too easily mitigated and lost to development.

Re-assess the Solent Recreation Mitigation Strategy. Bird Aware is a nice service, but advising residents of the need to improve their behaviour near birds hardly mitigates for the loss of habitat resulting from new developments. The presence of housing and people, however well behaved, will still serve to drive much wildlife away from their former habitats.
