Coastal Health and Erosion

From "Corporate Strategy"

Go to the project

"We are proud of our place which is clean, safe and welcoming to our residents, businesses and visitors."

Our coastal waters are neither clean nor safe. What pressure are you putting on Southern Water to stop regular discharging into the sea?

"Our communities are safe from coastal erosion and flooding, with our coastlines and habitats being high in biodiversity."

Our shoreline is the very opposite of safe: severe erosion at Broadmarsh has changed the topography of the area completely, including the effective establishment of a lagoon and loss of habitat for myriad species including kestrels. The footpath and hinterland at the base of Wade Court is similarly threatened. There is a danger of the mill pond being breached in this corner; salinity in this fresh water pond will affect several species of birds including heron, egrets, coots and moorhen, plus water voles. What agencies are you working with to ensure protection for these areas? And note, none of the communities of Hayling, Havant, Langstone, Emsworth and Bedhampton are safe from erosion or flooding all the time we are facing an irreversible climate crisis.

Update: I mistakenly claimed that Langstone Mill Pond is fresh water; apologies for that, I have now learned that it is salt water. However, a sea water breach would fatally compromise the habitat of many wildlife species, especially the egret population.
