We want to hear from you on our residents can be supporte to use active travel methods. By this, we mean any form of non-motorised transport – such as walking, running or cycling – that help you avoid using your car for short journeys.
In particular, tell us your views on these important points:
- What active travel methods would you like to use?
- What stops you from using active travel methods?
- Where would you like to be able to travel to using active travel methods?
- What changes to your local area would help you use active travel methods (e.g. more cycle lanes, better pavements)

I regularly walk along the Horndean Road into Emsworth. Traffic on the Horndean Road is heavy and quite fast. The pavement is quite narrow in places. I want to take my grandchildren to the skatepark to get them off their electronics but the route to it does not feel very safe, especially with scooters, bikes etc. It is also a main walking route for active travel to the local schools. A better walking and cycling option needs to be provided. Hedges need to be cut well back until then.
I am reminded of the cycle way along the Eastern Road in Portsmouth. It was clearly not safe but nothing happened until someone fell off their bike into the path of an on-coming car.
Let’s not wait for that to happen on Horndean Road please.

Having seen people’s comments on cycle paths and having experienced the bus / cycle lane which goes from Fareham to Gosport , which is excellent removing slow and frequently stopping vehicles from the road thus speeding up the general flow off traffic and I guess reducing pollution !! We could take something from this. Obviously this is to extreme for Havant though the above are still in the same county , I would personally like to see less cycle lanes but the ones that we do have being a far higher quality and going from town to town a kind of cycle highway/ motorway..
It’s only a dream but I would like the council highways officers to give it some thought or even better try commuting on the present cycle system .

I agree that we need better cycleways to allow us to access other areas, particularly Havant. There are areas that are inaccessible to pedestrians and cyclists, which is limiting. For example, if wanting to cross the A3 on a bike from Waterlooville, to get to Havant, I would have to go a much longer way around to avoid the impossible-to-cross roundabout at the Waterlooville motorway junction. The bridlepath to Leigh Park from Grassmere Way is too remote and the surface is terrible for bikes particularly in bad weather, and the route to go through Stakes and up to the B&Q roundabout and then Asda is a very long way around. We are often encouraged to use public transport and not use our cars for short journeys, but this is very difficult when cycle routes are insufficient in this area.

@Donna Patterson 100%. If I cycle between Havant and Waterlooville I use "Park Lane" between Calshot Road in the Warren area and Tempest Ave in Cowplain. An isolated, seasonal, often overgrown, unlit, definitely poor surfaced "footpath" where you definitely need off road mountain bike skills to be safe on your ride. Not for the average commuter it has to be said.
It is fundamentally unsafe for cyclists to use any other route between the two centres especially via the Asda roundabout which is highly dangerous. Havant Borough Council are renowned for poor attention to public Health and Safety and this journey is one of many that require improvement especially where its actually required. My last comment there was aimed at the cycle way outside their offices - you know, the one that nobody needed or uses!

@Mike Owens absolutely - the roundabout in Waterlooville is crying out for some (any) method of crossing it. Hulbert Road (both parts of it, actually, but especially the wooded part between Leigh Park Asda and the Waterlooville motorway roundabout, would be lethal for a cyclist. I agree, I wouldn't be happy cycling the bridleway alone even in the daytime.

Ironically the council's incompetence in managing car parks and prices is forcing people to walk or cycle places.
The current modifications are inept and the orange surface being used not only cause quagmires when its wet it seriously damages clothing and cycle drive chains. All weather tarmac would encourage far more communting!

I would like better cycle ways and not feel like a second rate citizen on my bike having to stop at every junction if I am on a cycle way
(Ie pavement or having to use a dedicated cycle junction that last all of 10m at havant collage a total waste of time ) plus having to guess which way a pedestrian is going to go !!!! ) , Hayling billy track should be an all weather path . Which the council have taken the government grant and only spent it on the best part of the path , the rest of the track is a muddy and flooded all winter pushing cyclists ack on to the main road … let’s be proud of this track and make it a tourist route like so many other councils have done !!!!
