Bidbury Mead Play Area in Bedhampton is due to undergo refurbishment.

So that any refurbishment meets the needs of the local community, we want to hear your views to ensure that any new provision is suitable, fun, and long lasting. Your input will help us shape the specification and design of the new play areas.

It is anticipated that the existing zip wire will remain within the refurbishment.

Carole Grainger4 years ago From a safety aspect soft flooring is needed. Grass just turns to mud in the winter and the ground is so hard in the summer months, Safety again, the whole area needs to be enclosed. Prevents toddlers from running off and dogs running in. I am a dog lover and owner, and my grandchildren are happy with dogs, but not every child (or adult) is, so the play area should be a dog free zone. Equipment needs to be age appropriate, to cover both toddlers and primary school age children. There's not much for the tiny ones at present. Equipment should be colourful, especially as the area is so dark, and preferably of metal for durability and ease of maintenance. I think the play area in the park off Station Road in Hayling Island is a very good example of what's needed.

Lynn Squire4 years ago I would love to see the equipment in brightly coloured, recycled plastic type which will last longer than wood. A large fenced off play area with separate areas inside this for toddlers, tweenies and teenagers with appropriately sized equipment in each area.Plenty of benches for the adults to sit and watch the children; a place to 'park' pushchairs; picnic tables outside the fenced off area to have lunch or snacks; soft flooringHaving a pop-up style coffee shop would be great for parents /carers, always a consideration when I take my grandchildren to a park!!

Philippa Gray4 years ago The current look of the play area in Bidbury Mead is excellent. I would not like to see more colourful equipment introduced. The drainage problems need to be fixed and new equipment provided that recreates the current provision, including benches and tables so parents can sit in comfort while their children play. I would like all equipment to be made from environmentally friendly materials and allocated a budget that allows for suitable maintenance to maximize its life.

Carolyn WHITE4 years ago The play area at Bidbury has never been fit for purpose in my opinion. The floor is just mud and there is always a leaking water main around the corner of the play area which just adds to the problem. So sort out a decent surface as a priority. There are lots of parks that add colour and choices for different ages. It needs to be secure and fences. It would be a good idlers to have seating and picnic tables in there as well. If you look at the park in Canoe Lake in southsea there are lots of different things for different ages. I think something like that is what is needed. There are no decent parks around Bedhampton area at all.

Leah Moore4 years ago Accessible play equipment and flooring. No bark/woodchip or similar so children with wheelchairs and walkers can't access the equipment. And playground equipment that wheelchairs, walkers etc can enjoy. Typical playground equipment leaves out children such as mine who require aides to access the world. Whereas accessible playground equipment can be used by all children of all abilities and needs.As well as all of the same development reasons that parks are good for all children, SEND children having access to them helps stimulate their physical development, strengthens balance and coordination, and increases muscle strength. Let alone all of the social and communication benefits. All things parents, caregivers and therapists works tirelessly to accomplish and it can be achieved with something as simple as a trip to an accessible park.Jubilee Park in Waterlooville have done a good job with this but we were disappointed there wasnt more accessible equipment. There wasn't a swing my daughter could safely access and the vestibular stimulation swinging gives her is always one of our main reasons to head to a park. Also it was great she could wheel onto the gym but there was nothing for her to do once she was there. Nothing eye catching to play with or do. The roundabouts and picnic benches were fantastic it's just a shame there wasn't more so it would be great if the Havant parks put more thought into the equipment and design.Accessible roundabouts, swings, seesaws and play gyms, should be the standard and someone with disabilities should be included in these discussions to ensure ALL children in our Borough have the space to play and thrive.

Michelle Fowles4 years ago The play area needs to suit all ages, something like denmead park or baffins pond for play equipment. A separate bit to keep older children occupied; include a skate/scooter area (like the one at Berewood); and basketball court/hoop with fencing (the current hoop is a token gesture but could be really useful) this hopefully will stop boredom leading to play equipment being broken for fun. Other good play areas include the Kingstone rec and Tamworth park(good monkey bars etc) in Portsmouth. Make it a park to be proud of again, please.

Ria France4 years ago Lots of seating for parents/carers - picnic benches Suitable flooring - currently gets so muddy and large puddles - so spongy tarmac type material would be best so small children can crawl around and no mud/puddlesMore equipment, always used to be a queue for the swings. Please keep zip wire- very popular! A decent roundabout as well as clinging frames with monkey bars.It seems this park has frequently been shut off because it is 'unsafe' so maybe wood is not the best material to use. Although I prefer a wooden park - it is a popular one and to avoid being closed regularly and being unsafe, metal may be the best option.Fully fenced off - my children are scared of dogs and they regularly run in and around the equipment. Would also be easier with younger children! Games to play on floor such as hopscotch. Maybe a road painted onto floor so scooters etc can be used.This park is so popular and would be amazing if it was updated. With more equipment that is safe, bright colours .

Karen Eyre 4 years ago The newly refurbished park in Horndean Road Emsworth is absolutely fantastic. My grandaughters love it. Would it be possible to have the same at Bidbury Mead? It has an all weather surface and clean, durable coloured metal play equipment. It includes baby and child swings climbing frames and slides, and a roundabout amongst other things. It would be brilliant if we had a park we could visit without driving.

Cree Butler4 years ago We have lived in Waterlooville area jnow for a good two years, and have found that most of the play parks are in this specific area. Since having my daughter last year, we found it was a good way to get out the house and socialise with other parents. Now my daughter is walking parks have become a huge impact in our life and she loves nothing more than to visit the local parks. We recently went to the new park in jubilee which we found a good amount for her to be able to play with, as well as facilities like benches in the park so we could sit and have lunch together as you find usually there's no seating for parents in the park. Although the facilities in the park are all brilliant, I found a huge positive was the floor with in the park, it wasn't concrete many children have accidents and the floor was soft tarmac which meant my daughter wouldn't end up with lots of scratches or scrapes. Which was a huge positive for me

Kids and parents should not have to fear for safety when it comes time to play.Create Different Play Zones for different age ranges, add some traditional play markings, ensure the playground is maintained, cleaned and has something for everyone. A range of climbing, swinging, sliding activities. The tunnels at Bidbury under the slide were always a real treat with the kids and would be a shame to have lose these.

Dec Curry4 years ago Priorities in terms of area Suitable surface as the area is easily flooded during any rainfall. (ideally soft rubber surface) Picnic tables ( preferably metal or recycled plastic to avoid damage) Resurfacing of the pathways leading to the park. Bins for dog waste, recycling and normal waste Fencing around the park CCTV nearby or monitoring A small cafe/hut serving refreshments Equipment and facilities Slide Swings Tunnels Climbing frames/ monkey bars Sand area Seesaw Balancing beams Roundabouts Not necessity but desirable Mini splash area ( like Mill Rythe holiday village) Small trampolines in floor Sports cage with football goals/ basketball nets Bike pump track or skate park All equipment should be made of metal or recycled plastic, colour scheme should be in keeping with surroundings and natural. The area would benefit as this is a large park which attracts many users with a large car park and good walking links. There is a lovely community feel with lots of different activities available. It would benefit my family personally as we have 2 small children who enjoy coming to this park regularly as it is our local. We have also used this as a park to meet with other parents ready for transition into infant school.

Daniel Marshman4 years ago Go visit the play parks at Drayton Park and Baffins Pond, they have good quality parks, basically just copy what they have done, it's really not that difficult.The key things are that the play park should be fully enclosed with metal fences and gates. The surface should be bark, or soft bouncy tarmac, no grass.Clearly there has been a problem with vandalism, CCTV could solve this, or a regular Police presence.Possibly out of scope, but a circular path for kids to do laps on a bike or scooter would be really good. There is currently no path around the top or bottom of the park, only a through path across the middle.

Hannah brown4 years ago It would be good to have a younger child/toddler section! The park near us (next to Hooks Lane) has barely anything for younger kids. It would be good to have a section for toddlers etc with toddler/baby swings, a smaller slide, a trampoline in the ground and a wooden car or something! And also an open twisty slide that’s slightly bigger. It would also be great if the ground could have colourful markings like colourful feet to follow, hopscotch etc.

Kelly Clout4 years ago The ground here is often very muddy so a new surface would be good,like tarmac perhaps,I think the old park pre 2014 had this,a high fence all around the play area with a gate that is locked at night might deter vandals.As for play equipment,I'd like to see swings for all ages,see saw,roundabout,assault course,tunnel slide and a splash pad would be a great addition!A cafe in the park would be very welcome also.
