Eastoke Corner Play Site

Havant Borough Council are working to refurbish the whole play site at Eastoke Corner.

The area currently consists of a play zone (in pink), a Multi-use Games Area (MUGA) (in orange) and an outdoor gym (in blue).

The play zone has limited items for play which are in an unusable state with a dated sandy surface that needs replacing. The MUGA presently has one single basketball hoop which is half surrounded by an ageing fence, also with an inadequate surface for sports use. The numerous items of outdoor gym equipment are also becoming dated with moving parts beginning to seize up.

To ensure that any refurbishment meets the needs of the local community, we would like to hear your views so that new provision is suitable, fun, challenging and offers longevity. Feedback provided will inform the specification for refurbishment works.

James Shepherd3 years ago Following the overwhelming success of the new skatepark, I believe there is leftover budget raised by Hayling Skatepark Project to allocate - at times the new skatepark is very busy, particularly younger children and older users seem to clash. Using the remaining budget HSP could put a few simple obstacles (a concrete ledge with a step up for example). This would be cheap (there is already sufficient budget) and would ease congestion at the new facility. I feel this would be well used and appreciated by the local community.

martyn lawson3 years ago This is a prime location, with alot of foot traffic for the area, but the facilities do let it down.In general there isn't enough seating or planting, there are a couple of bins along the front, but having them more strategically placed would be ideal what with the takeaway shops just across the road.Play area. With the seafront train next door it would be a shame to not involve that into the theme, this play is is used by visitors waiting for that train after all.As for equipment anything is better than what they have, but having swings, slides, roundabouts and climbing frames would be great.The basketball count.Although it's run down it is a good facility and I've seen it used on a number of occasions. It would benefit from a fence and more seating. Maybe if it were expanded to regulation size it would attract any local sports organisations use in the summer.The outdoor gym.In my time on the island I've never seen this used in any serious manor. There is the odd person playing about or some children that have become board from the play area. It's a waste.If we want to encourage use of the space then it would be better suited as a landscaped area to sit as there isn't much in that wider area. Or potentially expand or replace the small bandstand to encourage use by local community groups.If we want to encourage fitness the space would be better used for a long bouldering (climbing) wall, or setup as a cross fit space.I can't help, but think if the sports facilities there were useful and open to be booked by sports/community groups or local business (fitness trainers etc). Could be nautical theme - pirate ship?Recycling bins and plenty of seating.Splash area for childrenReclined / relaxing chairs facing the seafrontBeaver fit style frame / effective callisthenics equipmentRemove treadmill as its not used / needed when promenade is available to run on but keep bikes as these are a good alternate option for people who may struggle to walk or run. Would be good if you could add resistance.

Rideout Kelly3 years ago Like many others have said a splash park like the one near Southsea Castle looks great and is a good example. Seating around with beautiful planting. MUGA for netball and basketball, maybe football but not to sure if to near the road. The climbing rock picture looks really good some else put up and wooden play equipment, although that would have to be looked after, but some play equipment for all ages up to teens.A nice area with some shade and where music can be seen and enjoyed in the summer months. Maybe picnic area..

Paul Weller3 years ago I'm not a strong environmental campaigner but even I can see its shameful to rip up and replace something that I believe is yet to have its 10th anniversary, when so many other facilities are in urgent need of regeneration, including sea defence.The problem is this was seen as 'free' money when the grant was given and not been treated with the level of respect and maintenance needed. Also, as it was not covered by grant, the parameter never did get upgraded, with a collection of random fences, barriers and open aspects.The solution is to refurbish and maintain what is there and invest in a decent parameter boundary fence (wood slats?). Visual and physical separation from the roadways and toilets will make it a nicer place to be and it stands a chance of getting used for healthy exercise.Estimated cost to tax payers:-Boundary upgrade and equipment service £40kRip up and replace what is there, including proper boundary £150k-400k depending on the option selected.

Sally Goddard3 years ago I would love to see a splash park at this site. There are lots of traditional parks on Hayling already. This would be something different and would be a great draw for families in the warmer months and increase revenue to local businesses too. Something similar to Southsea would be great. A fenced area that is opened at certain times of year and children can play safely with water without the worries that the sea brings. Seating areas for adults would be easential too and perhaps nearby some actual picnic areas. In the MUGA area, a basket ball net that is useable for toddlers/small children would be great as they are always unable to use the adult ones.

Karen Griffiths3 years ago Playsite- the sandy area is a great idea but the equipment needs updating. If room, a small zip line for younger children would be ideal.Muga- whatever lines you lay out will still be used for football so whilst it is rather bold to suggest other sports, there isn't the room for a proper game of basketball but there is for a kick about. Keep the basketball net as it is good for penalty practice.Outdoor gym - nothing with moving parts as the sea water causes these to seize. Possibly reduce the size of this area; make it easier for those with their own equipment to use it and also boot camps. The space saved could be used for a swing and slide area as this is desperately needed

Laura Sawyer3 years ago The train station attracts lots of young families to the eastoke area, who often are waiting around for the next train. A safe and enclosed play area suitable for toddlers and up with swings and climbing frames would be well used. Wooden structures to climb on with a seaside theme would be lovely. The park at canoe lake, or within Staunton Farm are good examples of suitability for a wide age range. Hayling would also massively benefit from a splash pad. It would need to be fenced due to the proximity to the road and with plenty of seating and shaded areas.

Ashlee Cole3 years ago I think strength based equipment would be fantastic to see, although I imagine there are many Health and Safety issues involved with having strength based equipment that isn't being watched. I personally use strength based equipment at home, but would appreciate somewhere free to do the same, gyms are very expensive. Products | The Great Outdoor Gym Company (tgogc.com) these people seem to have it sussed!A huge issue I feel we have is that both the MUGA and gym are not protected from kids throwing sand about from the play site, therefore the equipment becomes dangerous to use. Maybe some sort of structure to protect it from firstly, the sand, and secondly a way to make it waterproof. I for one would use it in the colder months if it was shielded from rain. The play area needs to be more accessible for children (and guardians) of all abilities, although I imagine is hard if it is to be kept as a sand pit which I know a lot of the tourists and local kids love.

Debbie Drain 3 years ago I think the actual play park needs more equipment and things that are not easily damaged, as repairs often take a very long time to complete. I would suggest a wooden, more durable park. I like the outdoor gym area as it is suitable for all ages, maybe some more young child friendly equipment? Maybe in the remaining space you could make some tracks/roads (painted on) for small children on bikes/scooters? along with some hoops? There are lots of great parks not too far for ideas, Hogmoor inclosure, Bordon, Denmead and a great well built park in Free Francis close, Havant.

Torie Burgess3 years ago As a mother of two young children, 4 & 8 years old and a member of the community all of my life. I cannot think of anything our community is crying out for more than a splash park for young children. All of the parks are often taken over by older children hanging. It would be so lovely to give children from the island, surrounding areas and tourists to enjoy the facilities, we have to travel to either southsea or Lee on Solent to access facilities like this and on a hot day with island traffic it can make things so difficult. A splash park/pad would be such a great addition to the community and the local stops in the eastoke area.
