Matt Dalton•2 weeks ago Havant Park is one of the borough’s most important green spaces, especially being so close the Meridian Centre, the shops and train station, and its play area should reflect this by providing a modern, exciting and inclusive destination for local families. We are very lucky to have such a large green space in the centre of Havant and the Play Area currently really lets it down! The refurbishment presents an opportunity to create a play space that caters for children of all ages and abilities, encouraging outdoor play, physical activity and social interaction whilst complementing the wider park environment.The refurbished play area should include a wide variety of equipment to appeal to different age groups and play styles. Traditional favourites such as swings, slides and climbing frames should remain at the heart of the play area, but these should be complemented by more adventurous and inclusive equipment. This could include accessible swings, a large multi-play unit, climbing towers, rope bridges, balance trails, a zip wire, rotating equipment, an accessible roundabout, sensory play panels and imaginative play features for younger children. A combination of equipment that develops balance, coordination, strength and confidence would ensure there is something for every child, encouraging repeat visits and longer stays.The refurbishment should also include supporting facilities that improve the overall experience for families. Additional seating should be positioned throughout the play area so parents, carers and grandparents can comfortably supervise children. Picnic benches, litter and recycling bins, cycle parking and drinking water facilities would further enhance the space. A higher quality safety surface should be installed throughout the play area. Wet pour rubber surfacing would provide the most durable, accessible and low-maintenance solution whilst allowing vibrant colours and imaginative designs to be incorporated into the layout. Areas of artificial grass or bonded mulch could also be considered where appropriate to create variation whilst maintaining accessibility for wheelchairs, pushchairs and those with mobility needs.Graphics within the surfacing would provide additional opportunities for imaginative and educational play. Features such as hopscotch, trail markings, number games, alphabet trails, animal footprints and nature-themed illustrations would encourage informal learning and interaction. Consideration could also be given to incorporating designs that celebrate Havant’s heritage, local wildlife or nearby coastal landscapes, creating a unique identity for the play area that reflects the local community.These improvements are important because Havant Park serves a large and growing population but currently lacks a flagship play facility that reflects modern expectations. A high-quality refurbishment would encourage children to spend more time outdoors, improve physical and mental wellbeing, promote inclusive play and provide an attractive meeting place for families. Investing in the play area would also strengthen Havant Park’s role as a key community destination and encourage greater use of the wider park and its facilities.A good example of this approach can be seen at Drayton Park. Other play areas that we have visited that demonstrate good design include Rowland’s Castle Park, Hilsea Lido Adventure Playground and Southsea Common. These sites are popular because they provide a broad range of play opportunities, cater for different age groups, offer inclusive equipment, are well maintained and create attractive environments where families can spend several hours rather than making a short visit. Havant Park has the potential to become a play destination of a similar quality and reputation.
