We have an exciting addition to this year's programme of play area refurbishments and we want to hear your views on how we could improve Southwood Road play area on Hayling Island (PO11 9PU).

Subject to funding, Havant Borough Council plan to improve the provision at this site to ensure it continues to meet the needs of our community.

To make sure the new design is shaped and influenced by the people who visit this play area, we want to hear from you on what should be included so that the play area is suitable, fun and long lasting.

What equipment (such as swings, slides or climbing frames) would you like to see included in this play area?
What other provisions (such as seating, bins or landscaped greenery such as bushes, shrubs or grassed areas) should be considered for this refurbishment? What type of surface should the play area have (e.g. grass, wood chips, soft tarmac)?
What types of materials and colours would you like to see in this refurbishment? Would you like to see graphics on the flooring (e.g. hopscotch or other games) and if so, what should these include?
Why would these improvements be important to you?

Emily McGregor-Allan9 months ago This is a great opportunity to create a play space for all ages, not just young kids. The area needs play equipment for very young toddlers, young kids, and something for older kids as well. A zip-line and wooden climbing structures for older kids would be great as there’s nothing on the island for them like that. Maybe some big boulders for climbing over or sitting on. Grass would be preferable over tarmac. Trees that will grow to provide shade and somewhere to sit under, picnic benches, some wildflowers areas or planters with flowers would be lovely. Definitely provide bins. I wouldn’t put in sand. Keeping some of the space free would provide a place for kids to run.

Kamaren Jones-Pitts8 months ago It would be wonderful to see equipment that produce music in the park - perhaps tunes/equipment seaside related. This would be a great educational experience for children. Alongside this, it would be lovely to see equipment available for babies to pre teens! This allows the park to be inclusive and cater to the needs of many people including parents with multiple children of different ages. Considering the park is located at the seaside, it would be lovely to see the decoration be seaside themed, with colours and animals associated to the seaside.

Jessica John8 months ago A splash park with sand pit would be amazing what kids don’t love water and we are having nothing like that specially being a seaside town , a large treetop effect slide and climbing set with a couple of slides, with bridges and different things for the kids to climb along. Swingssetting area to take along picnics and some shaded areas or trees which will grow in the futurethe park at Eastoke has been brillant but something a little different to that and the lay out.some hills/mounds for the kids to run up and down as what kid doesn’t love that

Emma Farr8 months ago It’s great to hear this park is receiving a refurbishment.I’d love to see some musical play instruments such as wind chimes and/or rain chimes. It would be nice to have an age range of swings and slides like those at the park on the sea front.A multi use games area would also be great, allowing children to play a range of sports safely.Any improvements to make this park more useable will be greatly welcomed.

Steve Cann9 months ago This area has no shade whatsoever and gets the full blast of the sun in Summer. So, shaded areas and picnic benches would be a good start. These shaded structures could have solar panels attached to them to contribute to powering the machinery for a splash park. Slides, swings and a den type structure with a tunnel would keep kids entertained for hours. A splash park with various pipes and sprays would be great fun in the summer months. It must include some form of accessible playing for disabled children and those in wheel chairs, who are often forgotten about in such consultations.A bbqing area, similar to the "australian style" bbqs would encourage a community feel and make a trip to the park an adventure. Secure fencing and keeping dogs out is important. Keeping the grass would give it a more "garden style" feel. Bins must be supplied to prevent littering.

Amanda Cann9 months ago A shaded area with picnic benches, with a splash park would be ideal. Alternatively, a zip line would be very popular. A bike track designed to simulate a roadway going around the perimeter of the play area with twists and turns etc for younger children on trikes, bikes and scooters. Maybe a slide with a fort/ den/ castle theme. Shading should be an important consideration, together with sufficient seating and rubbish bins.

Sharon Lecocq 9 months ago The park should have a climbing and slide frame that toddlers can use independently. So many frames in other parks are innacesable to toddlers unless they are lifted onto the platforms. Often there are spaces they can fall through as well. It needs to be low and secure that they can climb steps and access slides and climbing areas without large gaps to fall through.I think grass or the soft spongy tarmac for the surface is better than wood chippings or bark. These are not good for babies to crawl on as they put the chippings in their mouths. With a bark type surface you are unable to let a baby crawl around on the floor .It need to be bright colours.A splash park would be amazing or a paddling type pool if costs are prohibitive. I think a sand pit is a waste of money as this would attract animals and unless the sand is changed regularly it would get dirty and not be used.The park by the railway attracts teenagers which is great but when there are little ones it does get quite dangerous as they are running jumping and generally alot more active so little ones can be knocked over easily. This area is large enough to have two separate areas so both age groups can use equipment independently.

Lynda Nash9 months ago This is a big area and should have plenty for children to do, swings, slides, climbing frames, balance bars, splash area, brightly coloured, gated area with self closing gate so no dogs within the play area. Plenty of seating preferably with some sort of canopy so people can sit in the shade. If you are going to keep the grass have it cut regularly, I have been there any a time with my granddaughter and the grass isn’t cut and plenty of dog mess.
