Springwood Play Area in Waterlooville is due to undergo refurbishment.

So that any refurbishment meets the needs of the local community, we want to hear your views to ensure that any new provision is suitable, fun, and long lasting. Your input will help us shape the specification and design of the new play areas.

Lorraine Davies3 years ago This has the potential to be such an incredible park - there is so much space!! Even now (with the state that it's in) it is used so much by children especially after school, but it is always rammed full, especially in the warmer months because there simply isn't enough equipment for the amount of people using it! Id love to see a more natural approach to the design and agree with many of the other contributers. Make use of natural materials - a wood based park would be amazing and also make the most of the awesome setting.Id love to see different areas for different ages, as someone with 3 kids of different ages this park doesn't really cater to them all at the same time. Zip wire and a couple of monkey bar options would be really great for primary school kids and I'd love to see more climbing equipment suitable for preschoolers as the existing small slide and baby swings is just not enough. I agree regarding that tall slide being a huge liability/safety hazard and that increased security will be needed to reduce vandalism. I also know having a local splash park would be INCREDIBLE and would make this area used even more by the community.Thanks in advance!

Steph Traer 3 years ago It’s great to see this park is finally being redone. As a community centre park and attached to a primary school it really is very poor. Right now there is a spiders web (half of it was taken away in 2020 never to be returned) but underneath it is a spider… a spider with 6 legs?! Even my 2 year old at the time questioned what terrible accident had happened to said spider for it to only have 6 legs… if animals are going to be part of a playground design please please ensure they are correctly ‘legged’ to avoid confusion. In all seriousness as much as the spider does annoy me, it would be lovely to see a more natural playground with challenge and enrichment for all children. I’d absolutely love to see the parent and child swings that they have at Victoria park, some high and lower monkey bars and a decent slide. If it’s going to be done I’d love to see it sturdy enough to withstand time and lots of children- as previously mentioned so so many members of the community use it. The new wooden park at Petersfield lake is a prime example of a decent park which promotes challenge and enrichment especially for the 4-12 age range.

Leonna MacGuire3 years ago There really isn’t much in this park especially for the smaller children, my daughter loves this park but is only ever able to play on the slide which for a 5 year old the small slide is a bug too small so she was climbing thee bigger which was worrying! Need more safety measures, the seating in this park also need a rethink the benches are the most awkward to sit on and watch my daughter! I also think the park needs to be split so there’s a area for the smaller kids and then separate for the bigger kids the, the roundabout needs a rethink as do the monkey bars that haven’t been there for ages

Emily Emily3 years ago We are really grateful that this park is going to be restored. My children use this park when they come out of school and also regularly during weekends and holidays and I know that is the same for a lot of families in the area. The spider web and rings that were in the park previously were great and were used a lot. I think climbing frames with bridges, monkey bars, slides, aerial runway, bouldering wall and swings would be favourable, also more benches/picnic benches. Aesthetically I think wood would look great in the area considering it being in a grassy/woodland area, but at the same time metal would also be fine. Denmead park is a great example of the use of space and equipment for children. There should definitely be more surveillance of the area as anti-social behaviour, graffiti, littering and criminal damage happen regularly in this area, especially in the park so I think having cameras put in, would be highly beneficial and also having bins to put rubbish in is great to help stop littering. A water park alongside a playpark would be incredible but I realise that is asking a lot, there is enough room in the area to do this and would bring in a lot more users from further afield during summer months. Also exercise equipment for all ages to use would be of benefit.The restoration of this park will be so beneficial and valuable for all families with children in the area and we welcome this with open arms so thank you.

Leila Mo3 years ago Submitting this on behalf of someone who was struggling with the link.Making the park bigger, having more adventurous apparatus, zip wire (similar to Denmead), different types of swings for children/young adults with disabilities. Sharing swings.With the climate getting warmer each summer, a splash park in the area would be ideal, especially for families who may not be able to travel into Portsmouth.

Keira Jacobs3 years ago We would love to see this park updated with something for all kids to use, we would love to see more natural materials be used in the updating of this play area.we would also like to have assurances that there will be more security for the play park as most of the time we are unable to take our kids as it always seems to be vandalised with food products.we would love for the play area to be fully accessible for children of all ages and abilities as I myself have a 1yr old and a 5yr old and as it stands there is not a lot for my youngest child to play on plus some of the hanging equipment has had bits removed with no explanation given as to why it has been done.

Sarah Moth3 years ago So happy this park will be refurbished! We go there usually once or twice a week. I love the ideas of more wood/animal themed play area as the location is perfect for that. I love the little wooden bear someone has sculptured just outside the park (I wish there was more!) as for the park itself my son (and seen many others) love the stepping stones part but its not very big at the moment and goes to areas that aren’t completed. More tree house type play areas are good for both toddlers and older children. Sensory/musical areas etc. nice benches are good but I’m cautious of picnic areas as sadly it usually encourages litter!

Toni Verrier3 years ago The surroundings could be inspiration for the new park. Using nature and the environment to make a sustainable and environmentally friendly play area. Safer equipment- my children and now my children's children all use the play equipment and I still shudder with fear at that slide!More seating/table areas for picnics and get together. Equipment for all ages. More sports equipment for older children. The green space we have is incredible, how can we make more use of it? Interactional play, cause and effect, bird spotting boards. Insect identification boards. Sensory equipment, sounds, touch, etc.

He adores the swings but if 2 babies are already there you’re waiting quite a while, so could do with more baby and bigger children swings.the smaller children frame is just a bit naff, could do with replacing and adding some more exciting things like a spin puzzle or steering wheel? Larger frame is too high, needs to be lowered slightly

Kirsty Parkyn3 years ago So happy that this park is going to get a refurb, it's such a busy park and used everyday by children from the local school of all ages, could really do with being made bigger as so much open space around it for this to be an option, an area for younger children and an area for older children would be good. Keep the roundabout kids love that. More swings as always waiting a long time to get on. A picnic area would be a good option , seating area. Get rid of the dangerous high slide and replace with a safer option with maybe a tree house type slide . Zip wire would be good. Monkey bars as kids love these too . And a nice place for the children to go , it's been in such an awful state for so long and it's the only park within a big radius that is used every single day . About time we got parks like Portsmouth council provide down town.

Steph Cufley3 years ago It is about time this park was redone. As the main park that serves a community centre it really is poor. My son was involved in a nasty accident here that has left a scar on his face where fittings were left sticking out of the ground. It would be great to see a sectioned park with a toddler section, a eyfs section and an older area, complete with parent and child double swings, monkey bars, high and low, slides and maybe a climbing wall. It would be an absolute dream for springwood to have a splash pad similar to the ones in Portsmouth too. Really looking forward to finally having a safe and challenging park to be proud of!

Claire Hamilton 3 years ago Natural wooden play area with interesting features that can be played with in different imaginative ways. Flooring safer with wood chip or similar so falling is more cushioned. Utilise things like local recovered wood, rope and tyres rather than shipped factory designs from half way round the world. Add in nooks as well as swinging things, balancing things, climbing things to vary play. Uneven landscaping can add dimension without too much cost like mounds and ridges. Demarcation with numbers or symbols can be used to create games like in capture the castle.

Danielle Evans3 years ago I think it would be wonderful to have an area just for baby and toddlers. Maybe a very colourful section with animals insects, wild life. Something they can learn with pictures and hands on. There isn't enough play space or equipment for babies and toddler's and they are shut out from play when the older children are in there. Maybe a sign up to keep dogs out the park too. I think 4 swings would be useful, as after school the park fills up with kids. A safe small climbing frame for baby and toddlers Then a bigger climbing frame for the older children. This will keep bigger kids playing on the baby quipment and will give a safe play area for the young ones who won't get hurt from the older ones. Activity wall , funny mirrors, maze game etc The park does need an extention regardless.

Laura Powell3 years ago The regeneration of the Jubilee play park is a good example as it has much better equipment now for younger and older children alike, a lot of parents use Springwood park after school particularly with younger siblings too and there is very little choice of equipment. Often a group of children will congregate at the top of the one big slide which can be dangerous, so a big play structure would be great with options for small and older children. The wooden structures in the play park on Darnel avenue in Waterlooville would suit the surrounding green areas and woods.Picnic benches in the green areas surrounding the park would be lovely, I live 5 minutes walk away and would use the park a lot more if it had better equipment and vandalism was better monitored. On many occasions there has been vomit in the playground or other substances all over the place. More seating inside the park for parents would be welcome too.

Kerstin Newton3 years ago The park at the jubilee fuel was recently updated and my girls love the musical pipes and the rain maker.I feel that this park needs tunnels, climbing frames and a sea saw.the swings are great but not enough of them, (maybe a twin swing) and the monkey bars are a little too advanced for the younger ones.as mentioned above, cctv would be a good idea along with more seating and the area extended to allow more play area. We avoid this park due to vandalism and drive to others that are cleaner and more appealing.
